GEDLING MW...........2 (Brown 24, Hayes 71)
GEDLING TOWN FC...0
Miners hit top spot
The Welfare duly despatched near neighbours Town to move atop the EMCL in a comprehensive victory.
Seven minutes in and the first chance fell to Jamie Brown whose stooping header at the far post drifted past the post following a long throw in from skipper Corey Nightingale. For the visitors Reggie Royes tried his luck from distance but generally the Town strike force rarely threatened Cherry’s goal. Brown inevitably scored the first 24 minutes in, his 13th of the season albeit with a touch of good fortune. His inswinging corner from the left was misjudged by Gareth Ellis who allowed to ball to just cross the line having failed to hang on. Ten minutes later and Brown combined with Steven Cox to test Ellis and just on the stroke of half time Barry Payne should have doubled the lead but his weak shot was easily gathered by Ellis.
The Miners continued the attacking football into the second period and went close again as both Cox and Ash Winfield tested Ellis. Brown had a great chance to increase his tally on the hour but again Ellis came to his sides rescue. The second wasn’t long in coming. Sub Matt Peberday powered down the right only to be bought down by McShane just outside the box. The free kick duties went to David Marlow and his exquisitely accurate delivery found Danny Hayes whose powerful header found the net to seal the win.
In recording their seventh win in eight, in what was not the most difficult of games, the three points were banked and recorded and the Miners soared to the top of the table.
