ANSTEY NOMADS......0
GEDLING MW............3 (Payne 44, Hayes 51, Hatfield 73)
The Quest for the title continues
The Miners travelled on a balmy summer evening in Leicestershire to take on an improving Nomads side who were in a fine run of form with 4 wins out of the last 5 played.
As usual Gedling started on the front foot and were a shade unlucky not to open the scoring on 3 minutes when Liam Corrigan fired over from a Corey Nightingale long throw and minutes later Stephen Cox set up strike partner Jamie Brown whose shot was just cleared. For the home side Wes York had to succumb to injury after barely 8 minutes and replaced by Kane Radford. Still Gedling powered forward and Nightingale, supplementing the attack, had a goal bound shot cleared off the line by James Edmonds. Two further efforts from the visitors rebounded off the bar as they took complete charge of a game in which the Nomads hardly threatened Cherry’s goal. Further efforts by Danny Hayes came back off the woodwork and Brown powered over on 28 after good interplay from Ash Winfield and David Marlow.
The breakthrough which their pressure deserved came a minute before the break. A quick Warren Hatfield throw on the left was quickly seized on by Barry Payne whose looping header spun over the head of keeper Joyce. Cox was on hand to make sure the ball crossed the line, but the goal has been officially credited to Payne.
Nightingales long throws, a la Rory Delap along with Browns set piece deliveries continued to cause a fraught Nomads defence major headaches.
The second half started much the same as the Miners strode forward at will with the midfield trio of Marlow, Winfield and Hatfield supplying the ammunition for Cox and Brown to feed on. Payne was also having a major influence on the game with his powerhouse running.
Cox should have doubled the lead on 49 only to be denied by Joyce and Hatfield tried from distance. The second, however, was not long in coming. Unmarked Hayes at the edge of the box fired in an unstoppable shot from 18 yards. Anstey’s only response was a couple of efforts from leading scorer Darren Taylor, but his shots were from distance and not enough to worry Cherry
Shaun Clarke and Danny Roberts, subs on for Winfield and Corrigan made little difference to some brilliant Gedling attacking play and Hatfield wrapped the game up on 73 following a headed knock down.
A fine game of football which keeps the Miners well on track and they will have a massive say in where the honours will end up on May 7.
A brilliant team performance from first whistle ‘til last which augurs well for the three remaining tussles.
