GEDLING MW........3 (Brown 7, Hatfield 50, Nightingale 74)
ELLISTOWN..........2 (R.Lewis 35, 60)
Skipper saves the day
It took top scorer Jamie Brown only 7 minutes to make his mark as the Miners powered on towards the league summit. In the first half hour they had enough chances to win 3 games but failed to find the net after numerous chances went a’begging. The opener arrived as visiting keeper James Flinders bravely blocked a Warren Hatfield goal bound shot but failed to hang on. The ball fell invitingly to Brown who shot home low and true.
Livewire Hatfield could have bagged a hat trick but somehow the Ellistown goal survived intact. It was a shock when the visitors scored an equaliser on 35. Jack Lewis set off on a run down the left and strode into the area. With no challenges forthcoming he passed the ball across to his brother Richard who scuffed his shot but the ball still nestled in the corner beyond Cherry’s despairing dive. Still Gedling’s chances came and went as Hatfield again and Matt Peberday went close. Brown deliveries from free kicks and corners were causing havoc in the Ellistown defence but somehow Flinders and his defenders rode out the storm.
Three minutes in to the second period Chris Hall hit the post and a couple of minutes later Hatfield got the goal his work rate and approach play deserved. Stephen Cox won a free kick on the left flank and Browns free kick whizzed into the area. Hatfield was first and quickest to react as he shot home from 10 yards.
Ellistown refused to lie down and Lewis got his second on the hour. A bouncing ball threaded through the home defence deceived everyone in a yellow shirt and Lewis strode round Cherry to net from an acute angle.
A nervy half hour still to play, but it was the skipper who recorded the points with the winner in the 74th minute.
Once again it was Browns pinpoint delivery which played a major part. Danny Hayes headed his cross back where it came from and Corey Nightingale volleyed home a fierce shot which took a slight deflection off defender Sean Doy on its way to the net.
Once again a nervy stuttering performance from the Miners, but you can only beat the eleven opponents in front of you and that they duly did which keeps them on the coat tails of the leading trio.
