The Miners kept the pressure on the top three with a comfortable enough victory at Welby Road on Saturday.
A scrappy first half saw few chances, with set pieces proving the chief threat to either goal. Jamie McKay’s 30-yard free kick whistled just wide while Darren Taylor’s free kick from right of the penalty area forced the first save in the 20th minute. Nick Hardy’s powerful long-range strike was heading for the top of the net, but Gedling keeper Ross Cherry beat the ball away.
Gedling were strangely subdued but threatened Richard Cragg occasionally with accurate set pieces, notably Jamie Brown’s in swinging corners. The visitors went ahead with a goal out of nothing when the Holwell defence were caught static by a long throw from the right which hit Danny Hayes’ shoulder and looped over Cragg for the opener. They should have increased the lead a minute later when a simple ball over the top was met by Matt Perberday’s run, but he blasted wastefully over from 10 yards.
Holwell danger man Graham Keast, recovering from a hamstring problem, replaced the out-of-sorts Taylor at half-time, but within a minute of the restart, Gedling undid the Holwell defence with another long throw, Danny Roberts finding too much space in the box to fire just over. Keast’s presence enlivened the home side’s front line which created the better chances. Ian Bitmead should have done better when Cherry miskicked a clearance straight to him under pressure from Stapleton, but blasted over.
Gedling doubled the advantage on the hour, Brown scoring his seventh goal of the season.
The home side could have capitulated but responded with the goal of the game with 20 minutes left. Good work from Keast down the left saw him send a pinpoint pass for Hardy’s run through the middle and the striker showed great composure to stop, cut back inside his defender and finish neatly. Holwell attacked with renewed belief, and players and supporters alike felt defender Luke Corrigan should have been red-carded for his two-footed tackle on Gav Williamson, but the referee showed leniency and a yellow card.
This seemed to distract the hosts who lost their attacking impetus, and Rob Aldridge, Dean Randall and tireless captain Steve Smith had to make excellent last-ditch tackles to deny Gedling simple shooting chances.
And the defeat was confirmed two minutes into injury time when Cragg allowed a harmless looking high ball to rebound off his crossbar straight to Warren Hatfield whose finish deflected in off Randall to regain the 2 goal advantage.
