Honours even in a fine game.
Town were without injury victims Nathan Benger, Adam Kay, Dan Williams and James Whitehead, but welcomed back goal machine Jay-Lee Hodgson to their ranks. Warren Hatfield returned to Plains Road after a spell at Carlton Town to link up in attack with Matt Peberday who returned after injury.
The teams more or less cancelled each other out in the early stages and the Miners seemed more up for the fight than their visitors, and for a while it looked like the home team might put a dent in the Lions title hopes.
After some early end to end sparring the first goal arrived in the 26th minute, a great cross from the left by Lee Askham was met with a sweet left foot volley from about 20 yards by Jay-Lee Hodgson which left Ross Cherry groping air.
After 37 minutes Askham rattled the Welfare goal frame after good wing play by Hodgson. Right on the stroke of half-time, Heanor were given a reminder that they shouldn't take their opponents too lightly, when Barry Paine's stooping header crept only just cleared Mark Frost's far post.
Soon after the restart, the home team drew level. A pinpoint cross from the right by Liam Corrigan flew across the Town goal and Jamie Brown only had to make head contact and steer the ball past Frost from 3 yards. On 61 Frost had to make a terrific diving save to keep out a powerful effort from Danny Roberts as the home took attempted the gain the initiative. It was a fine game of football with no quarter given by two determined teams.
The goal of the game in the 69th minute. Phil Austin and Askham combined well and the move ended with Man of the Match Askham firing across Cherry into the far corner of the net for the lead for the second time.
With just four of the scheduled 90 minutes left, Gedling grabbed what on the night, was a deserved equaliser. Keeper Frost appeared to miss a chance to clear following a Luke Smith free kick out wide on the left allowing Karim Ibrahim enough room at the near post to hook the ball over his shoulder and into the net.
Manager Walker made two decisive changes at the break and, with guts and a determination not to capitulate, saw the Miners through the second half with a fine display against the wind. With both Gresley and Borrowash winning on the same night, it was by no means a disaster for either the Miners or the Lions as the top four in the League maintain their strong positions.
