BARROW TOWN..............0
GEDLING MW.................1 (Payne 14)
Three points on the road keep the Miners in touch
Gooners fans will no doubt remember the terrace chants at Highbury of “1-0 to the Arsenal” in the 80’s and 90’s. Maybe Gedling MW supporters should now brush up on their singing voices after this latest hard earned victory over a resurgent and well drilled Barrow side. The deserved win resulted in 3 consecutive league wins by the same scoreline.
The Welfare nearly took an early lead when a thunderous free-kick from 50 yards out rebounded off the crossbar. Baz Payne couldn’t quite convert the rebound as his header also hit the bar and cleared to safety.
This was certainly a game of two halves as the visitors went at Barrow’s throats and took an early lead in the 14th minute through veteran midfielder Payne. A Luke Smith throw on the left was headed into Payne’s path by Craig Boulton and his cross shot beat Wilcox all ends up. Jamie Brown also twice went close in a one-sided half, the only shot of note from the home side was a Michael Paparozzi volley from 6 yards which just flew over. Striker Matt Peberday had to be replaced on 37 minutes with what looked a nasty injury, Chris Hall replacing him.
It was a different Barrow in the second period and substitute Ade Adelukan might have drawn his team level within minute seeing his fine effort hit the side netting. Josh Stevenson was causing the Miners defence some concern with his runs and crosses from the right and Gedlings custodian Ross Cherry had to be alert on 59 with a fine tip over from a corner as Barrow upped the tempo in search of the leveller.
The Miners were forced to play on the break as the home team moved forward, but the points were duly banked and registered thanks to Bazza’s first half strike.
Boulton and Sham Ramadam had decent shots fly wide, but the team held on for a fine victory in what was always going to be a tricky away fixture.
