GEDLING MW.................1 (Hayes 89)
GRAHAM ST PRIMS.........0
Hayes late late show secures the points[/u]
Graham St Prims visited Mapperley boasting a fine league run with 3 wins in as many matches.
The home team started on the front foot with Matt Peberday looking sharp from the off. Ash Winfield also went close after some fine interplay from Baz Payne and Jamie Brown. Ibrahim also tested Prims keeper Dave Kinder with a far post header from a Danny Hayes cross. St Prims offered very little going forward happy enough to snuff out any Miners progress with 2 banks of four in a disciplined performance.
The visitors had their first and only shot of the half on target in the 34th minute when Ross Cherry turned a Chris Briggs low shot away for a corner. Peberday was providing a good outlet for the hosts, going close on a couple of occasions as the half wound down and Gedling almost opened their account on 42 when, following a right wing corner, Brown saw his header cleared off the line by Paul Smith.
The second period saw a Gedling team determined to bank the three points which would keep them in touch with the trio at the top of the table. Payne and Peberday went close, but it was a sturdy Prims defence which held firm time and again as Kinder and his fellow defenders continued to thwart the home team. Peberday had a goal chalked off for a close offside and the visitors, in a rare foray upfield tried their luck with a Briggs snap shot which Cherry saved well with his legs. Following two corners in succession goal bound headers were cleared away from danger as the visitors goal and Kinder led a charmed life.
With the game beginning to fizzle out to a goalless draw, the breakthrough. Ex-Gresley Defender Tom Land fouled Clarke some 20 yards wide on the left. Substitute Craig Boulton delivered a delicious cross and Hayes arrived at the far post to head home the winner.
The Miners certainly played their ”Get out of jail” card in this encounter in which the visitors certainly deserved something out of a game which had 0-0 written all over it.
If the yellow and blues are to maintain a serious title challenge they must up their game at least two notches and put teams away before the final two minutes of a game.
