GEDLING MW...............1 (Brown 16)
BARDON HILL FC..........0
The Miners keep in touch with the leaders
An uninspiring game at Plains Road, but a vital three points gained in the Yellow and Blues bid to hang onto the coat tails of the leaders in the EMCL. Manager Walker was forced into a defensive re-shuffle as Liam Corrigan was ruled out with a groin injury and Danny Roberts reverted to full back with Craig Boulton returning to the Miners midfield.
The first 12 or 15 minutes were pretty even before the home side started to impose themselves in midfield and it was no surprise when they went ahead on 16. A long throw in from the left by Luke Smith completely deceived keeper Ash Mulhotra and the ball fell invitingly for Jamie Brown 6 yards out who spun and scored for his fourth in as many games. Thereafter followed some fine play from the hosts and the Bardon defence had to be at its smartest to keep out efforts from Baz Payne and Matt Peberday. Midway through the half Boulton should have doubled the advantage but could only see his goal bound shot rebound of Mulhotra’s legs. Fifteen minutes later a Payne effort was well gathered by the visiting keeper. A comfortable but edgy lead at the interval against a Bardon team who offered very little.
Gedling continued on the front foot after the break and Peberday went mightily close on 53 when his fierce shot was clawed away by Mulhotra. From the resultant corner Danny Hayes tried his luck from 20 yards but once again Bardon’s custodian kept his side in the game with another tremendous save.
In the 63rd minute a very strange decision by Mr Seward left everyone in the ground scratching their heads. Peberday found himself in a one-on-one situation bearing down on goal with centre back Adam Fletcher in pursuit. Despite an obvious foul on Peberday, he regained his feet to plant the ball home. The referee somehow decided that the Miners forward had committed a foul and chalked the goal off, despite the nearest linesman seeing no wrong.
A few more chances came the way of the home side, the most memorable on 85 when the livewire Peberday smashed his shot against the post, and the game fizzled out with all three points bagged and recorded.
Not the best game of football ever witnessed at Plains Road but needs must and this win keeps the Welfare in touch at the pinnacle of the division
