GEDLING MW...............1 (Brown 48)
THURNBY NIRVANA.......2 (Walker 38, Melbourne 73)
Nirvana take the points as Miners charge falters
Plains Road welcomed a Thurnby side boasting a fine run of form having just broken into the League’s Top 6 and boasting the EMCL’s leading scorer in Jordan Smith who had amassed 28 of his sides 62 goals.
The game started cagily with neither team on top but the more clear cut chances appeared to fall to the home team with Danny Roberts going close. Nirvana seemed content to soak up any pressure and their response was shots from distance from Matt Melbourne and Sean Phillips. On 22 Stephen Cox had a half chance after a fine run down the right from Chris Hall and Baz Payne also went mightily close on 27 when he rose to meet a Luke Smith cross but saw his header clear the bar. The visitors mustered their efforts on the counter attack and almost went ahead after a fine back heel from Smith in the penalty area just failed to find his strike partner Melbourne. They didn’t have to wait long for the opener. In the 38th minute Ryan Walker headed home a corner from Alidhodzic despite the close attentions of the Miners defenders.
Gedling started the second half on fine, determined to push on and maintain their title challenge with Manager Walker making 2 attacking substitutions and pushing Payne into a more forward role. The move paid off within 3 minutes of the restart when Payne found Jamie Brown who set off on a storming run towards goal with defenders floundering on the sticky surface. Just inside the box he unleashed a low shot which beat Harris all ends up for the equaliser.
It was game on now and both sides were determined not to give an inch. Smith played in Miller on 59 who should have done better but fired high and wide.
A key moment in the 68th minute possibly had a major effect on the result. Harris in the Nirvana goal made a tremendous double stop from Payne and Sean Clarke to keep his goal intact. Another fine Harris stop 5 minutes later led to the referee awarding a corner kick which most observers thought should have been a corner. From the aforesaid kick the classic sucker punch as Nirvana powered up field on the counter attack and Melbourne put his side ahead with a low shot. Thurnby held on to take maximum points back to Leicestershire.
The Miners continued their attacks with ferocity with full backs Smith and Liam Corrigan powering upfield in an attempt to draw level both going close. It was, however, not to be and three points went a’begging.
Not enough thrust and decisiveness in the final third saw to that.
