RADCLIFFE OLYMPIC FC.........0
GEDLING MW.........................2 (Peberday, Winfield)
Back to winning ways for the Yellow and Blues
Three points in a game that was totally dominated by the Miners. The home side started the brighter and were slightly unfortunate not to have taken the lead as early as the 3rd minute when Ben Richardson just failed to connect with the first corner of the game. At the other end Chris Hall went close with a fierce shot after a mazy run. Gedling upped the tempo and both Matt Peberday, making his debut, and Ash Winfield tested James Mountain with good efforts. It wasn’t all one way though and Jason Fisher had to be alert as he denied Carl Westcarr the opener. That wasn’t long in coming, however, as the Miners were awarded a free kick some 30 yards out. Luke Smith swung the ball into the box where it was nudged on by Danny Hayes into the path of Peberday who lashed the ball home.
A minute later the defining moment of the match. Peberday and home skipper Craig Anderson tussled for the ball in midfield. It was clearly a foul tackle by the Gedling player, but Anderson retaliated by pushing his opponent in the face instead of accepting the offered olive branch of an apology and he trudged off for an early bath.
Any hope that Radcliffe had in salvaging anything from the game disappeared from that point on. The incident probably cost his team dearly as their resultant re-shuffle took the edge out of their play.
Peberday followed 2 minutes later with a needless late tackle on Richardson near the touchline adding a second yellow to the one received in the Anderson incident.
Sensing blood, Gedling upped their game and Karim Ibrahim and Hall again went mightily close to adding to the scoreline.
The action did not relent in the second half and Winfield almost scored a minute in with a fierce shot which had Mountain grasping for air. A minute later Steven Cox just missed with a fine headed effort. The best chance for Radcliffe came as Josh Royce fired over when clear and on 56 ex-Miner Grant Walton tested Fisher with a header. Royce was proving a handful for the Gedling defence and strike partner Richardson set up Westcarr who should have done better with a tame shot. The home side were denied penalty claims on the hour and Will Heath also went close.
The pace of Hall and Ibrahim were stretching Radcliffe at will and it was no surprise when the lead was doubled on 69. A right wing corner swung in by Smith was met perfectly by Winfield at the near post whose deft header beat Mountain all ends up. The game was well won by now and Danny Roberts and Hall again both went close to extending the margin. The home sides main threats were coming from subs Heath and Maddison, but Gedling cruised to victory which keeps them among the front runners for the league title. One win in 6 for Radcliffe contrasted with one defeat in 9 for the Welfare.
Unless, or until, Olympic address their disciplinary problems on the pitch the latter part of the season will be a long hard slog. Too often the red mist descends without rhyme nor reason which masks what a fine footballing team they really are behind the sinister facade.
As for Gedling, a comprehensive team effort saw three points collected in cruise control, but sterner tests lie ahead as the season begins it’s long run in.
Radcliffe Olympic: Mountain,Miles, Dalmedo (Heath 63) Spencer, Spence, Anderson (C) Walton (Maddison 78) Richardson, Royce, Westcarr (Gartland 85) Korol.
Sub Not used:~ Brandy
Gedling MW: Fisher, Roberts, Corrigan (Brown 78) Smith, Nightingale (C) Hayes, Winfield, Peberday, Hall, Ibrahim, Cox. Subs Not used:~ Boulton, Westwood, Frost, Greenhalgh.
