GEDLING MW....................2 (Cox 8, Payne 95)
RAINWORTH MW...............2 (Hewitt 84, Mitchell 106)
(Rainworth win 4-2 on penalties)
Gedling lose but progress to the Quarter Finals
As usual, Gedling started on the front foot and took the game from the off to their more senior opponents. The Miners unbeaten in January went into the game full of confidence and it took only 8 minutes for them to open their account. Stephen Cox pounced on a wayward defensive pass and skipped round Tom Hannigan to score just inside the far post. It wasn’t all one way and it needed a sharp save from Ross Cherry in the home goal to deny a Topliss shot. Minutes later Matt Roberts fired just over as the visitors began to get back into the game. Again Cherry was working overtime to keep his side ahead and the best chance of the game came half way through the half when Craig Mitchell should have drew his side level. It was end to end stuff as both teams powered forward and Gedling were unlucky to increase the lead as a Barry Payne header was well held by Hales.
As they do in the league, Cox and Jamie Brown were causing all sorts of problems for the Rainworth defence and Chris Hall and Liam Corrigan threatened on surging runs forward. Just before the interval Hales showed his class with a superb stop from a shot and turn from Brown.
Once again Mitchell wasted a great chance to equalise on 55 when it looked easier to score from close range and yet again Cherry denied Ryan Carolan’s header. The home guardian was having a fine evening and was on hand again to keep out the Rainworth attack, superbly supported by Corey Nightingale and Danny Hayes at the heart of the Miners defence.
In the 84th minute the visitors finally made the breakthrough as Chris Hewitt was allowed to turn inside from the left and fire across Cherry into the corner, despite the keeper getting a feint touch. Into extra time and the action didn’t cease. Again the Miners took the lead on 95. Substitute Craig Boulton dinked a great ball into the box where fellow Sub Ben Greenhalgh headed the ball on for Payne to arrive late at the far post to slide the ball home. The lead lasted until the first minute of the second period. Mark Camm made a terrific run down the right wing before crossing into the 6 yard box where Mitchell was on hand to head powerfully home. Onto penalties and the away side were more clinical, triumphing 4-2 from the spot to take the tie.
The outcome became favourable to Gedling MW the following morning when the Notts FA deemed that Rainworth had fielded an illegible player. The subsequent Committee decision was that the tie should be declared a home win and the Miners will entertain Blue Square North team Eastwood Town on Monday 28th February
