GEDLING MW....................1 (Wooley 23)
GRESLEY FC.....................1 (Winfield 84)
Miners remain unbeaten in 2011 – by a whisker !!!
It was 2nd against 3rd at Plains Road, but it was the Derbyshire team which ended the evening atop the table after an enthralling match. In the end the fine football played by Gresley, as we have all come to expect, was matched by a determined backs to the wall, gritty performance from the home team who never gave up and, in the end, the shared points seemed on reflection fair.
Gresley started as though their lives depended on the result and Royce Turville and Brian Woodall moved forward at will combining to cause the home defence some problems. At the other end the strong running Chris Hall fed Jamie Brown who couldn’t find a way past Gary Hateley in the visitors goal. On 18 Gresley had a real chance to go ahead. A well rehearsed free kick from Woodall found defender Barry Wooley whose header just cleared the bar. Just 5 minutes later almost a carbon copy bought the opening goal. Once again Wooley moved up for Woodall’s free kick 30 yards out and rose highest to head home.
Still Gresley piled forward and Gareth Langford and early substitute Kyle Bryant went close as Gedling hung on for the interval. Not that the home side did not have chances with Brown the liveliest and they may have drawn level after 40 minutes when Brown fired just wide after a fine surging run from full back Liam Corrigan. Ash Winfield also powered forward to feed Brown again, but his shot was cleared. Ben Greenhalgh, an early sub for Steven Cox, shot across a deserted penalty area with Hateley stranded.
The second half saw much of the same with unrelenting pressure from Gresley and skipper Carl Slater fired just wide from some 25 yards. The Miners were up against it for the most, but still managed to create chances of their own with Brown again going close and Danny Roberts failing to connect after a fine move.
Still the forward duo of Woodall and Turville were creating chance after chance and behind them Mickey Lyons was stamping his authority on the game with a dynamic midfield display of passing and moving and was involved in practically everything Gresley did.
After 61 minutes Ross Cherry was called on to keep his side in the game with a fine stop from Lyon’s volley. It was certainly backs to the wall job for the home side and Gresley should have increased their lead after good chances fell to Bryant and Turville again. Cherry again denied Woodall and a tame effort from Winfield seemed to sum up Gedling’s night as the goal just would not come.
After 84 minutes, relief for the home team. A Luke Smith right wing corner was swung in under the bar. Defenders and forwards alike clambered and fought for the ball, and as Hateley failed to hold or clear the ball, Winfield appeared amongst a pack of players to poke the ball home for the equaliser.
Maybe Gresley ventured home disappointed that all three points weren’t in the bag that their possession deserved, but the Miners showed tremendous grit and determination in the face of adversity and fought fire with fire to maintain the unbeaten run. The whole team defended solidly as a unit against, arguably, the best forward line in the League.
As a footnote it was a pleasure to see a top of the table clash between two committed teams without a single yellow card needing to be shown and devoid of any unpleasantness seen on this ground two weeks previously.
