GEDLING MW........4 (Cox 3, OG 25, Nightingale 78, Roberts 92)
RADCLIFFE ..........3 (Royce 65, Westcarr 67, Massingham 73)
Battle of Plains Road maintains the six match unbeaten run.
Two old rivals, both boasting winning runs and in good form in the top six, battled it out in a seven goal thriller which had just about everything, albeit some of the more unsavoury kind. It certainly wasn’t a spectacle for the purist.
An unpunished nasty tackle on Barry Payne by Craig Anderson inside the first two minutes set the niggly tone with the Radcliffe players seemingly targeting Gedling’s midfield playmaker with some rough treatment which forced his withdrawal through injury after only 12 minutes
The Miners took the lead three minutes in. Karim Ibrahim and keeper James Mountain battled for a 50-50 ball following a cross from Luke Smith and the ball deflected kindly back off the keeper into the grateful path of Steven Cox who slotted home. There followed a game that flowed from end to end with Carl Westcarr going close after 10 followed by a fine effort from Phil Massingham. At the other end Jamie Brown also went close and Ash Winfield also tested Mountain.
The second goal on 25 was result of a misunderstanding between full back Ash Miles who, in attempting to find his keeper with a simple back pass from 20 yards, only succeeded in beating Mountain at his far post aided by the strong wind. Still Olympic tried to get back into the game and Massingham again went close with a free kick and Westcarr was always a threat. For the Miners, young forwards Cox and Brown were causing the Radcliffe defence all sorts of problems with their quick movement.
The half time cuppa seemed to galvanise Olympic and in the second half, with the wind at their backs, began to pile forward and play the kind of football that everyone knows they can play. Westcarr again went close and Josh Royce could have put them back into the game after 50 minutes but was ruled offside. The wind was playing a major part in the game and in the 65th minute it assisted Radcliffe to pull one back. Ex-Miner Grant Walton tried a hopeful cross which looked as though it was going well wide, but was met at the far post by Royce who scored with a stooping header. After Brown again fired wide for the home team, Westcarr struck 2 minutes later to level the game with a delightful goal drawing the advancing Cherry to fire home. In the 73rd minute the visitors went ahead for the first time in the match. A corner from the left was headed onto the bar and fell kindly to Massingham who lashed the ball home. Mountain was then called upon to keep his side level as he brilliantly tipped a Brown effort away to safety. The action was unrelenting, end to end stuff but the inevitable yellow card count rising.
The 78th minute bought the equaliser from the penalty spot. Ibrahim and Ash Brandy tangled in the box and the nearby linesman, a mere 12 yards away, adjudged that the defender had handled the ball on the floor. Skipper Corey Nightingale fired home for 3-3.
The end to end stuff never stopped and a neat Royce header put in Massingham yet again but he fired high and wide. As the game was heading for a gutsy draw, late drama. Well into stoppage time Brown travelled down the left and tangled with David Hawkes. As both players got to their feet, Hawkes appeared to stamp on Brown’s chest and was dismissed by Mr Cox. From the resultant free kick the ball found its way out to Nightingale on the right and up from the back. He floated the ball back into the box from where it was headed clear. From nowhere Danny Roberts appeared from 20 yards out and thundered the ball home. Cue jubilant scenes for the home supporters and bench alike at the obvious winner coming with so little time left.
As one could have expected the visitors red mist descended, and as the home players were celebrating, Massingham appeared from nowhere to get involved, steaming into the Gedling players and flooring (the already substituted !) Payne with a blatant headbutt to end what his Captain had initiated some 88 minutes earlier. The inevitable red card was shown and the game finished soon afterwards to record a fine victory.
Radcliffe Olympic are a fine footballing side with some excellent players. In this seasons FA Cup competition they did themselves, the County and the League proud with their achievements. It therefore remains a mystery to why they continually feel the need to resort to their darker side with sneaky, underhanded petulance, cynical tripping, fouling and constant winding up of match officials and opposing players. Quite simply they appear to have turned into a bunch of aging thugs. Apart from the aforementioned 2 red cards, Radcliffe amassed 8 yellow to Gedling’s 2.
